HyperOptik is the new urban incarnation of Cascade Optical: West Michigan's principal boutique for fine and unique eyewear since 1993. Since the ongoing renaissance of Grand Rapids' Uptown area, owner Rob Conens and son Christopher have plotted a second location that would complement the serene, polished vibe of Cascade with a shop set in the bustling, gritty, trendy stretch of Wealthy Street.
The new location next to the Wealthy Theatre is actually a return to the area for the Conens family. Rob's father Bernard, recently immigrated from the Netherlands, opened an optical shop just across the street in the mid 60's and was later in the 70's the first to introduce fine European eyewear to West Michigan. Cascade Optical has carried on that mission in Grand Rapids with a chronic dominance in exclusive European and Japanese eyewear. In that same spirit, HyperOptik aims to smash the ubiquitous style of 'branded' eyewear from chains and malls with original, independent designs from Europe, Japan, and the US, while debunking the popular myth that 'independent' always equals 'spendy'. We feel the brilliant generation responsible for transforming Grand Rapids' urban districts into dynamic, art-filled communities deserves equally brilliant eyewear.
Though different in name, HyperOptik is identical in service and technical acumen to its mother-shop Cascade Optical. In fact, Cascade Optical's entire finish-laboratory outfit, which has been doing specialty lens work since 1977, has been moved to the Wealthy Street location and contributes an “open kitchen” feel to the place, occupying the back third of the 1200 sq ft suite. Unique eyewear demands a unique lab to work with the often unorthodox and uncharted creations of the world's top eyewear designers. Not only are jobs finished faster by our lab men, they are also more accurate and perfectly fit than the work performed by the factory-like mega-labs relied on by any other boutique. For HyperOptik and Cascade Optical alike, custom is the norm, a difference akin to visiting one's personal tailor rather than a big-box department store...
