DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?
No, we are not in network for any vision plans such as VSP, EyeMed, Cole Vision, or Spectera. Some do reimburse for an out of network claim, but this will vary depending on the product and the individual policy. Contact your insurance provider to see exactly what your out of network benefits are.
CAN I USE FLEX MONEY OR HSA FUNDS FOR EYEWEAR?
Yes, you can use Flex Plan or HSA money to purchase prescription eyewear, contact lenses, or pay for exam services. Debit cards issued with these plans work perfectly fine.
CAN I BUY FRAMES AND HAVE MY INSURANCE LAB MAKE THE LENSES?
Yes, this works well enough for some frame types such as full-rim plastic frames or traditional metal frames. This is not a great idea for more complicated or unique designs such as those from Theo, Anne et Valentin, Lindberg, or DITA. Insurance labs are not accustomed to working with specialty frames like these. Keep in mind that insurance labs are geared up for maximum volume, not maximum attention to detail.
WHY WOULD SOMEONE PAY "OUT OF POCKET" FOR EYEWEAR IF THEY HAVE INSURANCE?
Vision 'coverage' has exploded in the past few years as many companies have trimmed benefits and look for a low-cost option (low cost to the company) to soften that blow to the employees, but they are only a real benefit if the monthly premium is little to nothing. If you are paying a fair amount for this benefit you may want to tally the total annual cost, as many people have found they break even at best when compared to going strictly "out of pocket". All major vision plans today are owned by or affiliated with a frame manufacturer or retail chain and are perfectly self-serving in that sense, but the problem with this arrangement is a truncated number of frame style options and lower quality lenses available to the patient. There is an entire world of brilliant, small production, independent frame companies that will never fall under the umbrella of 'insurance eyewear'. For those who favor a high level of craft and original design, a pair of insurance glasses is best suited as an emergency backup or perhaps a dedicated pair of 'computer' or reading glasses. This is the best way to put an eyewear benefit to use.
We feel that one's eyewear is the most crucial element of one's wardrobe in addition to being a critically functional tool used every day of the year. What other accessory or clothing item is seen and judged by every individual you face? What else is so intimately bound with one's personal image? Characters, icons, moguls, and stars throughout history were made and remembered by their eyewear. Ultra-mass-produced insurance glasses won't be captivating anyone's imagination any time soon.
WHAT WILL MY PLAN PAY FOR AN OUT OF NETWORK CLAIM?
This varies literally anywhere from zero to 100%. Since we are an out-of-network provider we are not able to look up anyone's personal benefits, but be sure to contact them on your own to determine what they are. You may be surprised to find your options are not limited to the list given out by the insurance company.
